THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — It was an instant classic as Cal Lutheran women's lacrosse defeated the Lewis & Clark Pioneers 16-15 on Monday night.
The game had seven ties and one lead change. The Pioneers took the early lead as the Regals weathered the storm, took control late, and won their third game this season.
"We're excited to get another win on the season," Head Coach Laura McIntyre said. "We're continuing to learn, grow, and implement changes."
Sydney Shin scored five goals including the game-winner with 2:27 remaining in the game. Giselle Bonilla was next with four goals, Meghan Angus added three, and Malina Diaz had two goals and three assists.
Shin added a team-high six grounds balls and Angus had five with three caused turnovers and four draw controls. Diaz matched Shin with three draw controls. Bella Bravo was in the goal and made 10 saves.
The Pioneers jumped out to the early lead and went up 3-0 just five minutes in. The Regals stayed in the game and Angus scored with nine seconds remaining in the first quarter to make it 4-3. The teams kept the points coming in the second. Shin mirrored Angus to end the half and tied the game at 7-7 with one-second remaining.
The second half was all about runs. The Pioneers came out with something to prove and scored four goals in the first four minutes. The Regals responded with six goals and took their first lead of the game, going up 13-11 with 10 minutes left. After the Pioneers tied the game at 13-13, Shin and Diaz scored back-to-back goals to grab the lead again. Diaz's shot was a strike as she jumped in the air past the defense. The Pioneers answered and tied the game again as the Regals looked to make one last push. Shin had the game-winner as she converted a goal with 2:27 left. The defense and Bravo did the rest as the Regals took the game.
