Game Recap: Baseball |

Wechsler, Offense Dominate Game One; Kingsmen Rally Late in Game Two

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran baseball used an offensive explosion and solid pitching performance by Luke Wechsler to take game one of its doubleheader against Pacific Lutheran and rallied in the eighth inning of game two to win both games on Friday afternoon.

GAME ONE: Kingsmen 15, Lutes 1
Luke Wechsler (W) was stellar as he picked up his third win of the season, shutting out the Lutes (6-12) through 5.0 innings of work while striking out five.

The Kingsmen (12-5) offense exploded, scoring 13 runs in a three-inning span and combined for 20 hits in the contest.

After jumping out to a 2-0 lead, the Kingsmen posted a three-spot in the third inning, using speed on the bases to put pressure on the Lutes' defense, with Kai Caranto, Lucas Danielewicz, and Blake Wink all recording a stolen base in the inning.

Up 5-0, the Kingsmen continued to pour it on, scoring 10 runs in the next two innings. Danielewicz and Wink drove in two runs and Caranto, Sebastian Smith, Troy Anderson, Noah Matsumoto, and Carlos Vega all posted an RBI during that stretch.

Dean Olsson, Colten Hanson, and Max Sagan came out of the bullpen to close out the last 4.0 innings for the Kingsmen.

GAME TWO: Kingsmen 8, Lutes 4
The Kingsmen scored the game's first run in the bottom of the second inning thanks to an RBI double by Smith, but the Lutes offense stayed steady. They put up one run in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to stay ahead on the scoreboard despite the Kingsmen answering with runs in the fourth and sixth. Trailing 4-3 heading into the late innings, the Kingsmen were poised for a comeback.

Matsumoto kicked off the eighth inning by reaching on a hit-by pitch and pinch runner Kaden Brennan advanced to third base after an error by the Lutes. Gordon Richardson tied the game up with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-4, but the Kingsmen weren't done. Alec Garcia was hit by a pitch and Josh Quinn doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Danielewicz gave the Kingsmen their first lead of the game by knocking in Garcia with a sacrifice fly of his own, and then Anderson singled to score Quinn, making it 6-4. They scored two more insurance runs courtesy of Wink, who roped a two-run double off the left-field wall.

John Frazier started on the mound for the Kingsmen, pitching 5.0 innings while striking out seven in a no-decision. Michael Smith and Cameron Cooper provided 1.2 innings of shutout ball from the bullpen, and Kyle Johnson (W) was clutch in the seventh and eighth innings, earning the win in his 1.1 innings of work. Joshua Kim took care of the Lutes with a clean ninth inning to secure the victory.
