Regals Clear Century Mark to Retake First Place

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Seven different Regals reached double-figure scoring as Cal Lutheran women's basketball reclaimed first place in the SCIAC standings with a 102-84 win over Occidental on Wednesday night.

The Regals (15-6) moved back into first place in the conference after taking down the Tigers (16-4) at Gilbert Arena, improving their conference record to 10-3 as the Tigers fell to 10-4. The Regals are tied with La Verne with three games to go. The teams split the season series with each team winning at home.

Alline Ballard continued her impressive freshman campaign with 25 points and 16 rebounds, Janna Holley had 15 points and eight assists, Karina McMillan and Grace Godines added 14 points each, and Aliya DiMuro, Sara Mills, and Kaiya Mack all had 10.

The Regals' 102 points marked the second time this season that they have eclipsed the 100-point mark, with the first coming on Dec. 7, 2023, when the Regals defeated Bethesda University 104-70.

They had offensive success all night. Up 27-25 in the second quarter, the Tigers began to press full-court and the Regals made them pay the rest of the way. A 19-3 run on perfect 9-9 shooting was just the beginning of a Regals offensive explosion. They shot 63.64% in a big second quarter that propelled them to a 50-36 lead at the half.

It was more of the same in the second half, with the Regals getting and converting on high-percentage shots. They followed up the second quarter with an equally as efficient third quarter (63% shooting). Ballard and Holley were responsible for back-to-back-to-back buckets in less than a minute at the end of the quarter to extend their lead to 20 points, 75-55. The Regals never wavered the rest of the way and didn't let the Tigers get within 12 points en route to the victory.

With three games remaining, the Regals look to finish strong and hang onto the top spot in the SCIAC. They go on the road to face Caltech next on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 4 p.m.
