WHITTIER, Calif. — Cal Lutheran women's lacrosse made history and earned the program's first win with a 16-4 defeat of Whittier College on Wednesday night.
Regals Lacrosse started the program in 2020 and had a tough start due to Covid-19. The Regals got a forfeit win in 2022 but picked up their first real win against the Poets.
It was a n impressive performance on the offense and defense as the Regals dominated the Poets. The Regals scored the most points and the defense allowed the fewest in program history.
Sydney Shin and Madison Soforenko led the way with five goals each, tying the program record. Malina Diaz and Josie Oparanaku were next with two goals each. Shin helped move the ball around and had three assists with four Regals having one more.
The Regals defense was all over the ball as Shin had nine ground balls setting the program record. Meghan Angus was next with six ground balls, Diaz had five, and Oparanaku had four.
The Regals got off to a hot start and jumped out to a 6-2 lead after the first quarter. They continued to cruise in the second quarter, outscoring the Poets 5-1, and had an 11-3 lead at the break. The Regals controlled the second half and made history. Bella Bravo was in goal and made three saves.
The Regals are off-campus for the next game. They're playing Marian at Moorpark College on Saturday at 11 am.
