THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran women's water polo battled as they fell to Ottawa in overtime 15-14 and Azusa Pacific 14-6 on day one of the Tina Finali Tournament.
Against the Ottawa Spirit, Megan Findlay and Bethany Metcalfe led the offense with four goals each. Metcalfe had the offense clicking on all cylinders as she added five assists.
Izzy De Souza and Vianne Will split time in goal. De Souza made eight saves and Will had six. Will added four steals.
The game went back and forth as both teams took multiple leads. The game was tied 2-2 after the first quarter. The Regals took control in the second outscoring the Spirit 3-1. Ottawa fired back in the third, outscoring the Regals 5-1. Cal Lutheran answered that call 5-3 in the fourth and the score was tied 11-11 after four quarters. The Spirit escaped in overtime, outscoring the Regals 4-3.
Versus Azusa Pacific, Metcalfe had two goals, and Jacsen Donohue and Miranda Miller had an assist. De Souza and Will continued to split time in the cage. De Souza had 10 saves and four steals and Will made four saves.
The Cougars jumped all over the Regals and were up 3-0 after eight minutes. The Regals matched their opponent point-for-point in the second quarter as they trailed 3-3 at the half. APU shutout the Regals 4-0 in the third as they cruised to the victory in the fourth.
The Regals continue the tournament on Saturday. They take on Cal State East Bay at 8:30 am and CSUN at 4:30 pm.
