Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Regals Defeat Toronto, Battle Division I CSUN

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — No. 3 Cal Lutheran women's water polo hosted CSUN and Toronto on Friday. The Regals defeated Toronto 8-5 but fell to CSUN 10-7. 

The Regals battled against the Division I Matadors from CSUN. Jacsen Donohue, Katie Knight, and Bethany Metcalfe led the way with two goals each and Megan Findlay added one more. The Regals moved the ball around as Findlay added two assists and three more Regals had one. Miranda Miller put her squad in better offensive spots as she recorded four drawn exclusions. 

On the defensive side, Izzy De Souza was in goal and made nine saves with four steals. The Regals had 12 steals in total as Knight added three and Reyna Clark had two more. 

The Matadors controlled the first half, outscoring the Regals 3-1 in the first and second quarters. The Regals bounced back in the third quarter, matching the Matadors 3-3 in goals. The Regals outscored the Matadors 2-1 in the fourth as they came up just short against their Division I counterpart. 

Miller and Knight led the way against the Varsity Blues of Toronto and Donohue, Metcalfe, and Lauren Lohmeier each added one. Metcalfe kept the ball moving on the offensive end and totaled three assists. De Souza continued the day in goal and made 10 saves. Metcalfe recorded three steals and De Souza had two more. 

The first quarter went back-and-forth as the teams were tied 3-3 after eight minutes. The Regals took the advantage in the second quarter and outscored the Blues 3-1 and had a 6-4 lead at the break. The Regal defense controlled the third quarter, shutting out the Varsity Blues 2-0, and took an 8-4 lead with eight minutes to go. The Regals held the lead the rest of the game and picked up their first win. 

The Regals are back in action next weekend as they host their annual Tina Finali Invitational. They start with Ottawa on Friday at 9 am.
