THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran men's volleyball made history again this year as the Kingsmen took a set from Division I UC Santa Barbara on Thursday night. Scores of the match were 25-22, 27-29, 24-26, 19-25.
The Kingsmen gave the Gauchos a run for their money as they took the first set from a Division I opponent in program history. The No. 5 ranked Kingsmen in the AVCA Division III Poll are now 11-4 on the year.
The Kingsmen impressed with Michael Stahl and Jordan Cooer leading the way with 16 and 11 kills, respectively. Ben Weber was next with seven kills and Taylor Marks and Borys Horiuk had five each.
T. Marks showed off an all-around game and added 42 assists, six digs, and two block assists. Logan Marks led the defense with 10 digs and Weber had four total blocks.
The Kingsmen controlled the majority of the match and led in points, blocks, and digs. However, the Gauchos were better for attack percentage with .333 compared to .256.
The Kingsmen put the pressure on the Gauchos from the very beginning. With the first set tied at 21, Stahl had a kill and then an ace. After a point by the Gauchos, Cooper and Horiuk finished off the set with back-to-back kills.
The Kingsmen stayed neck-and-neck with the Gauchos in the second and third sets but came up just short. The magic ran out in the fourth set as the Kingsmen came up just short and took just their fourth loss this season.
The Kingsmen jump back into Division III play this weekend. They are at St. Norbert on Saturday and play Calvin at 10 am PT and St. Norbert at 12 pm.
