Kingsmen Knock Off UMHB For Fourth Straight Win

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Devon Lewis joined the 1,000-point club as Cal Lutheran topped University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, 80-73, on Saturday afternoon.

Lewis' 17 points were enough to make him the 28th 1,000-point scorer in Cal Lutheran history, and the first since Austin Cole reached the mark in the 2018-19 season. It was also Lewis' fifth time leading the Kingsmen (5-2) in points in the team's seven games.

"It was all a testament to continuous work in the gym, trusting God, and having the best teammates in the country," Lewis said.

For the second time in three games, four Kingsmen, all seniors, tallied double-digit points: Lewis, Jake Martin, Nick Attanasio, and Tommy Griffitts dropped 17, 15, 14, and 12, respectively. Additionally, five Kingsmen pulled down at least five rebounds.

It was a tight game early, with the Kingsmen up by just two after five minutes. However, Cal Lutheran would take over the rest of the half, leading by as many as 12, and take an eight-point lead going into the break.

The Crusaders, however, came out firing in the second half. They cut the Kingsmen's lead to two three separate times, but ultimately couldn't overcome the deficit as Cal Lutheran pulled away in the final seconds to secure an 80-73 victory. It was their fourth straight win and snapped an eight-game winning streak for UMHB.

Head coach Russell White said that he's loved seeing his seasoned veterans help steer the team back on track after a 1-3 start.

"It's really beneficial to have a group of experienced players who have been through so many big games," he said.

The Kingsmen are back in action at noon Sunday against Whitman College.
