REDLANDS, Calif. — The Cal Lutheran women's volleyball team came away from their match against Redlands with a 0-3 loss on Saturday evening. The defeat puts the Regals at 1-3 in the SCIAC and 5-7 overall.
Caitlin Murphy led the Regals with six kills, followed by
Kira Mortensen with five.
Tarin Rueckert,
Sophia Muller, and
Olivia Fernandes all added four kills as well.
Keegan Corley picked up nine digs while
Alexis Holloway had seven and Fernandes had five.
Tess Holbert collected 15 assists.
The Regals also put up a total of 20 blocks as Mortensen led the way with seven. Murphy and Rueckert each added four, but unfortunately the team's effort could not outweigh the Bulldog's 35 kills and 18 blocks.
After dropping set one, Cal Lutheran took control early in the second before Redlands stole back their momentum. Down 0-1, the Regals rode out a seven point scoring streak featuring kills from Muller and Holbert and a service ace by Holloway. The Bulldogs responded with five points in a row and kept their lead throughout the remainder of the set.
The Regals continued their pattern of a nail-biting third set. Taking an early 6-2 lead, the beginning consisted of a service ace from Corley and two kills from Fernandes. The Bulldogs and Regals proceeded to trade points through the remainder of the set. Down 21-24, Cal Lutheran added an intense three points off of an error by Redlands, a block by Mortensen and
Reese Balagot, and an ace by
Gianna Bava. However, the Bulldogs secured the last point with a kill taking the set 25-23 and the game 3-0.
The Regals will be returning to Gilbert Arena on Tuesday, October 8th. They will face No. 10 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 7:00 PM.
