THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran women's volleyball hosted No. 11 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Tuesday night, dropping the match 1-3. The scores of the contest were 12-25, 15-25, 25-23, and 13-25.
The Regals collected a total of 40 digs against the Athenas, as
Keegan Corley led the way with 15. Behind her was
Makenna Kawamura with seven and
Tess Holbert with five.
Kira Mortensen led Cal Lutheran with 12 kills and three block assists.
Sophia Muller and
Gianna Bava also contributed to the offense with seven and five respective kills.
Holbert also tallied 16 assists over the four sets.
The Regals found themselves in a deep hole as CMS dominated the first two sets, but for the fourth game in a row, they fired back in the third. This time the Regals were finally able to get over the hump, taking the third set from the nationally ranked Athenas 25-23.
CMS started the third set with a 3-0 lead before Cal Lutheran quickly tied it back up on a kill by Muller, an ace from
Tarin Rueckert, and an error on the Athenas. The opponents continued to shift the momentum back and forth, trading points and leads until the last two points. Tied 23-23, another Muller kill and Athena error gave the Regals the set.
The fourth set resembled the first and second with a strong performance from CMS, ultimately allowing them to take the game 3-1.
The Regals (5-8,1-4 SCIAC) are back in action on Friday night. They will travel to Pomona-Pitzer with first serve set for 7:00 PM.
