Kingsmen Go 4-0 at Gary Troyer Tournament

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Cal Lutheran men's water polo scored a combined 81 goals over their four games at the Gary Troyer Tournament, securing four dominant wins over Ottawa Arizona University, Connecticut College, Westcliff University, and McKendree University this weekend.

GAME ONE: Kingsmen 20, Spirit 14
It was a full team effort as 10 different Kingsmen found the back of the net en route to the team's highest single-game goal total of the season. Kayden Sourbeer and Zachary Isaac led the way with four goals each, Ethan Guereca had three, Cormac Flanders and Levi Cook both scored twice, and Tre Eade, Zane Hermann, Tommy Riffle, Jack Bradbury, and Lincoln Hall all had one.

The match opened with a flurry of scoring, with both teams trading goals in the first period. The Kingsmen started strong, jumping out to a 3-1 lead before the Spirit got into a rhythm. After one, the Kingsmen trailed 5-4.

As the game progressed, the Kingsmen found their groove on offense, particularly in the third period where they netted nine goals. With consistent pressure from the offense, they extended their lead 17-12 going into the fourth period.

The Kingsmen stayed in control down the stretch, outscoring the Spirit 12-6 in the second half to pull away with the victory.

GAME TWO: Kingsmen 25, Camels 6
Another team effort for Cal Lutheran led to their largest win margin of the year with goals from 13 different Kingsmen. Max Gerdeman led with four goals, Gucereca, Isaac, and Hall had three, Sourbeer, Flanders, and Hermann each added two, and Eade, Dylan Villanueva, Bradbury, Jude Solis, Adam Scrivner, and Paul Patterson all scored one.

On top of the killer offense, the Kingsmen only allowed the Camels to score once in each of the three periods. Connecticut had an additional three goals in the last quarter but their deficit was far out of reach.

Cal Lutheran started the game with four straight goals before one Camel found the back of the net, then piled on another nine straight in the first and second periods. The Kingsmen held a 16-2 lead going into the second half of the match.

Despite the large advantage, Cal Lutheran did not take their foot of the gas. Another seven goals were added by the Kingsmen and one by the Camels, making it a 23-3 game. Connecticut tried for a comeback but time was not on their side. They were able to sling three goals through the Cal Lutheran defense in the last quarter, but the Kingsmen prevailed and took the game 25-6.

GAME THREE: Kingsmen 19, Warriors 17
The Saturday morning game served as a rematch for the Kingsmen and Warriors, as they just faced off last weekend in Thousand Oaks. This time, Cal Lutheran was victorious and took the game 19-17.

Hall led the Kingsmen in scoring with five goals in the match. Flanders and Bradbury were just behind him with three goals each, Hermann added two of his own, and Sourbeer, Guereca, Cook, Merrick Giles, Patterson, and Alan Castillo all scored one a piece.

Westcliff put up the toughest fight for the Kingsmen this weekend, pushing the defense. Jacob Taff and Jaeger Gonzales split time in goal, but all seven of Cal Lutheran's saves came in the first half from Taff.

The Warriors kicked off the scoring in the first period, but it was a back and forth game until the last two minutes when the Kingsmen took the last three points in a row. Cal Lutheran held the slight 5-4 lead going into period two.

The two squads continued to trade goals, but the Warriors took a bit of the momentum near the end of the second quarter, making the halftime score 10-9 in their favor.

Tied 14-14 going into the last period, Cal Lutheran put up a five spot featuring three straight goals from Hall. The Warriors cut the deficit, taking two points back before Cook sealed the deal with a goal in the last seven seconds.

GAME FOUR: Kingsmen 17, Bearcats 9
The Kingsmen closed out the weekend with one last win over McKendree, holding the scoring advantage throughout the entirety of the match.

12 different Kingsmen scored against the Bearcats, again led by Hall, this time with three goals. Flanders, Nic Mastropoalo, and Eade scored two each, and Riffle, Brody Swarm, Justin Boals, Hermann, Gerdeman, Giles, Sourbeer, and Guereca all added one.

Bo DuBois spent the full 32 minutes in goal, collecting five saves.

Cal Lutheran started off strong with three straight goals in the first period, only allowing one from McKendree. Up 3-1 going into the second, the Kingsmen continued to keep the scoring in their favor. At the half they were up 7-4.

Cal Lutheran did not let up in the third and fourth quarters, adding on five more goals in each. The match concluded in victorious fashion for the Kingsmen with a score of 17-9.

The Kingsmen look to extend their four game win streak next week. They will host Caltech on Saturday, October 12th at 11:00 AM.
