Box Score PASADENA, Calif. - Down 2-0 with just 29 minutes left to play, Alejandro Loza (4) and Max Scott (2) delivered for Cal Lutheran men's soccer, knotting the game up at 2-2 to salvage a draw against Caltech on Saturday afternoon.
The Beavers (6-3-2, 1-2-2 SCIAC) had the upper hand in the first half. They put seven shots on goal to the Kingsmen's one and scored the match's opening goal in the 20th minute. After 45 minutes of play, the Beavers led 1-0.
The Beavers made it a two-goal lead just five minute into the second half. Now trailing by two, the Kingsmen (4-5-2, 2-2-1) had to flip the switch.
In the 62nd minute, Alejandro Loza won a 50-50 ball and found himself with an open shot from the top of the box. He let it rip and scored a banger, putting it into the top right corner, giving the Beavers goalie no chance at the save.
Loza's team-leading fourth goal of the season injected new life into the Kingsmen who were determined to pick up that extra point with a draw. In the 79th minute, Scott got it on his right foot, turned, and scored the equalizer, a beautiful goal through traffic in that same top right corner. Lance Park created the opportunity with a great pass that earned him the assist.
Gen Katashiba was a huge factor in the Kingsmen effort. He faced a total of 23 shots with 12 being on goal and made 10 saves, marking the first time a Kingsmen goalie posted double-digit saves since 2018.
With the result, the Kingsmen staved off a conference loss in the always-tight SCIAC race. Next, they take on Whittier on the road this Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.
