WHITTIER, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran men's water polo team emerged victorious at the Slade Aquatics Center, defeating the Whittier Poets 13-10 on Wednesday night. Senior
Cormac Flanders led the way with four goals in the match.
The Kingsmen took an early lead in the first quarter with back to back goals from
Lincoln Hall, and one a piece from
Kayden Sourbeer,
Jack Bradbury, and Flanders.
They continued their rally into the second period, not allowing a Poet goal until the last 12 seconds.
Zane Hermann,
Tommy Riffle,
Paul Patterson, and Flanders helped bring Cal Lutheran to a 9-5 advantage entering the halftime break.
The offense was limited through the remainder of the contest, and Whittier was unable to close the gap despite their efforts. Two more goals from Flanders and one each from Riffle and Sourbeer sealed the deal for the Kingsmen.
Sophomore
Jaeger Gonzales spent the full 32 minutes in goal for Cal Lutheran, recording nine saves.
For the Poets, Zander Montoya led the offense with three goals, while Kenshiro Matsuzawa and Loronzo Angelucci split time in goal, collecting a combined 10 saves.
The win brings the Kingsmen to 10-10 overall and 3-2 in the SCIAC. They currently sit at fourth place in the conference standings.
Next up, Cal Lutheran will travel to the University of La Verne. They will take on the Leopards on Saturday, October 26th at 11:00 AM.
