THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran men's soccer scored three straight times to secure a 3-2 victory over Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday evening, with goals coming from Kane Reese, Joel Wollin, and Max Scott in the victory.
The Kingsmen (6-6-4, 4-3-2 SCIAC) wasted no time applying pressure early, with JP Melgoza testing the Sagehens' goalkeeper just 90 seconds into the match. Although the Kingsmen dominated possession, the Sagehens' defense remained solid until the 37th minute, when Kane Reese broke through with a sharp finish off an assist from Melgoza. The Kingsmen took their 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.
The Kingsmen doubled their lead in the 59th minute, with Joel Wollin finding the back of the net. Jack Gominiak provided the assist, giving the Kingsmen a comfortable cushion at 2-0.
The momentum stayed in the Kingsmen's favor, as Max Scott added a third goal in the 75th minute, assisted by Reese and Melgoza, putting the game seemingly out of reach.
However, the Sagehens (3-8-3, 2-7-1 SCIAC) weren't done. They pulled one back in the 80th minute and scored again with less than two minutes remaining to narrow the gap to 3-2. Despite a late surge, the Kingsmen defense led by Gominiak, Lance Park, Caleb Merrill, and Preston Fleming held firm in the closing moments to secure the victory.
Goalkeeper Gen Katashiba played a key role for the Kingsmen, making four crucial saves to keep the Sagehens at bay. The Kingsmen outshot the Sagehens 19-11, with their defensive resilience and clinical finishing leading them to a key victory.
With the win, the Kingsmen remain in a playoff spot in the SCIAC standings as they push toward the postseason. They will look to build on this momentum in their next match when they take on Chapman at home on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m.
