THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran men's water polo team defeated No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in exhilarating fashion on Saturday morning at the Samuelson Aquatics Center. The win brings the Kingsmen to 9-10 overall and 2-2 in SCIAC.
CMS opened the scoring with a goal from Gavin Netherton, but Cal Lutheran responded quickly with
Kayden Sourbeer finding the back of the net.
The second period saw a flurry of goals, with
Tommy Riffle giving the Kingsmen the lead. The Stags fought back to equalize with the help of Jack Bryant and Nick Kennedy, but Sourbeer and
Cormac Flanders added to Cal Lutheran's tally, giving them a 4-3 advantage going into halftime.
As the match progressed, the intensity increased. By the end of the third period, the Kingsmen still only held a one point lead seeing more goals from Flanders and Sourbeer. However, CMS was able to tie things up after a goal from
Zane Hermann in the fourth, setting the stage for an overtime showdown.
Both teams were relentless in overtime scoring one goal each, but it was Sourbeer who scored the game-winner in sudden death and clinched the victory for Cal Lutheran.
He led the Kingsmen offensively with four goals on the day, while Flanders, Hermann, and Riffle followed behind him with three, two, and one respectively. Jaeger Gonzalez had a standout performance in goal, making 17 saves.
Next, Cal Lutheran will travel to take on Whittier. The contest is set for Wednesday, October 23rd at 7:00 PM.
