THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran women's volleyball team rolled to another solid victory on Thursday evening, sweeping DePauw University (Indiana), 25-19, 25-20, 25-15.
The Regals (8-9,3-5 SCIAC) hit .304 in the non-conference match and out-blocked the Tigers 8-2 as they increased their winning streak to three games.
Kira Mortensen and Caitlyn Murphy were the story for Cal Lutheran offensively. Mortensen finished with a match-high 10 kills, hitting .400 with five blocks on the night. Right behind her, Murphy had nine kills (.800 pct.) with no errors, four blocks, and a dig. The Regals also saw kills from
Sophia Muller,
Alex Hayes,
Kennedy Smith, Train Rueckert, and
Kaylee Clayton.
Student journalist Joshua Christopher met with Mortensen and Murphy after the game. When asked about how the group performed in the match, Mortensen said, "I think our team just played as a team. We did our best and did what we planned to do and that's always successful".
Murphy added, "It was probably one of our best performances of the season. Beating a team like DePauw, who is pretty solid, gives us a lot more confidence for the rest of SCIAC. I think we've got everything we need to be a powerhouse team".
Makenna Kawamura got the start at setter on Thursday and made the most of it, collecting a season-high 24 assists and one dig.
Tess Holbert added another 19 assists and a service ace.
Keegan Corley, who suited up at libero, led the defense with 25 digs.
The Regals get a short break before entering the second round of SCIAC play on Friday, October 25th. They will start back up taking on No. 12 La Verne at 7:00 PM on the road.
