THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – After five straight losses, two of those being to top 15 ranked teams, Cal Lutheran women's volleyball was able to get back to their winning ways on Saturday night, sweeping Occidental in dominant fashion, 25-9, 25-9, 25-14.
It was a one-sided contest for the entirety of the match, which took just 66 minutes to complete. The Regals (6-9, 2-5 SCIAC) hit .337 in the match, holding the Tigers (3-11, 0-7 SCIAC) to just 14 kills and 17 errors for a -.033 attacking clip. Cal Lutheran out-blocked Oxy 9-3, out-aced them 14-1, and held a 50-35 margin in digs.
Head Coach
Kellee Roesel said "I thought our kids stuck with the game plan and executed tonight. Our defense was disciplined and that was our best serving performance to date. Really proud of our captains tonight. Tess and Sophia were dialed in and impressive".
The Regals were able to get deeper into their bench on Saturday night with 13 different players getting on the court.
Kennedy Smith and
Tarin Rueckert led the offense with six kills each, while
Sophia Muller and
Alex Hayes added five apiece.
Kira Mortensen had four kills and led the Regals in blocks with five assisted.
Makenna Kawamura started at setter and led all players with 14 assists while
Keegan Corley recorded 20 digs at libero. She was one of four players to post at least one service ace, along with
Tess Holbert who led with eight and Rueckert and Kawamura who each had one. Holbert, at one point in the second set, served seven straight times as the Regals turned a 4-2 lead into an 11-2.
The Tigers were led by Eliana Channell on Saturday, collecting three kills and a team-high two blocks. Meara Hayes led the team with seven assists.
"We are hoping to build on that momentum going into Tuesday and the second round of SCIAC," said Roesel. Next, Cal Lutheran will travel to Pasadena to take on Caltech. The match is set for Tuesday, October 15th at 7:00 PM.
