Kingsmen Push Win Streak to 13

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Four Kingsmen recorded double-digit point totals as No. 13 Cal Lutheran men's basketball won its 13th straight game, taking care of La Verne 80-69 on Wednesday night.

The Kingsmen (17-3) are in first place in the SCIAC standings with a conference record of 10-1. Both Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps claimed victories tonight and are tied for second place with 8-2 records.

Riley O'Connor led the way with a career-high 17 points. Tommy Griffitts was next with 14 points and eight rebounds, Stephen Davis had 12 points, and Ze'ev Remer added 10. The four scored with great efficiency going a combined 19-28 (67.9%) from the field.

The shooting performances helped the Kingsmen put up an impressive 30-62 (48.4%) game from the field. They also dominated physically from the opening whistle. They outrebounded the Leopards (6-13, 3-8 SCIAC) 46-28 in the contest.

The Kingsmen held the Leopards to just 23 points in the first half, the sixth time they've held an opponent to under 25 points in a half this season. They dominated on both ends, shooting over 50% from the field and holding the Leopards to 33.3% from the field. O'Connor exploded for 10 straight points on his own including an and-one and a three-pointer at the end of the half, leading the Kingsmen to a marginal 41-23 advantage.

It was Davis, who started 0-2 with no points through the first 20 minutes, that highlighted the second half. He scored all 12 of his points in the second half, going 5-6 with two threes during the stretch.

The Kingsmen continued to score and held off any Leopard comeback en route to the win and remained undefeated at Gilbert Arena with a home record of 11-0.

They remain at home next game as the Kingsmen face Redlands (12-7, 4-6 SCIAC) for their second matchup of the season on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 2 p.m.
