Kingsmen Hand Occidental, Second Undefeated Team First Loss

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — For the second time this season, Cal Lutheran men's basketball handed an undefeated team their first loss as the Kingsmen extended their win streak to five games by defeating Occidental 73-69 on Wednesday night.

The Kingsmen (9-3, 2-1 SCIAC)  took down Occidental (9-1, 2-1 SCIAC) after the Tigers started the season 9-0, marking it the second time they've dethroned an undefeated team, with the first coming just two games ago when the Kingsmen upset No. 5 ranked Tufts after their 10-0 start.

Devon Lewis led the Kingsmen in scoring with 16 points and added six rebounds and four steals. Brock Susko was next with 14 points and Patrick Renane added 10.

The Kingsmen outscored the Tigers 22-12 over the last 10 minutes of the first half to establish a nine-point lead at the break, 33-24.

Stephen Davis scored the first points of the second half and Susko followed it up with a three-pointer to extend the Kingsmen lead to 14, the biggest lead of the game.

With nine minutes to go, the Tigers went on a 15-5 run to cut the deficit and make it a one-possession game. With under a minute to play and the scoreboard reading 69-66 in favor of Cal Lutheran, the Kingsmen got two clutch stops and forced the Tigers to foul. Lewis and Renane both went 2-2 on their trips to the free-throw line to secure the win.

The Kingsmen take on Chapman (7-5, 1-2 SCIAC) next in their final home game of their six-game homestand. The Panthers will visit Gilbert Arena on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 2 p.m.
