THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The Regals used a big third quarter to propel them to victory as Cal Lutheran women's basketball took down Whittier 78-67 on Wednesday night.
With the win, the Regals (11-4) have now won four straight games and sit atop the SCIAC standings with a conference record of 6-1. The Poets (11-4) fell to 6-2 in conference play and are tied for third place.
Janna Holley led the Regals in scoring and assists with 19 and five, respectively.
Grace Godines scored all 15 of her points from beyond the arc as she went 5-6 from downtown,
Alline Ballard recorded her eighth double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds, and
Kaiya Mack broke double-figure scoring with 10 points.
Both teams played a clean and competitive first half as the Regals went 13-31 (41.94%) from the field and the Poets went 14-32 (43.75%). The Regals led by a slight margin after the first 20 minutes as the score was 42-39 heading into halftime.
The Regals created separation thanks to a dominant third quarter on both ends, including a 10-0 run. They outscored the Poets 23-9 and went 9-17 (52.9%) from the field and 2-3 from three while holding the Poets to just 4-18 (22.2%) shooting.
Despite getting outscored in the fourth quarter, the Regals played efficient defense to stifle any Poet comeback attempt and secured the win.
The Regals look to extend their win streak to five games when they host Caltech (7-7, 4-4 SCIAC) on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 4 p.m.
