WHITTIER, Calif. — No. 16 Cal Lutheran men's basketball scored 58 second-half points to defeat Whittier 95-68 for their ninth straight win on Wednesday night.
With the win, the Kingsmen stayed atop the SCIAC standings, with Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with a record of 6-1. The Kingsmen are 13-3 overall.
Devon Lewis led five Kingsmen in double-digits as he scored 22 points on 7-13 field goals. He was also 6-6 from the free throw line. Tommy Griffitts was next with 14 points and he added six rebounds and five assists. Nick Attanasio hit three three-pointers and scored 13 points and Brock Susko and Ze'ev Remer added 12 each.
The Kingsmen controlled three main categories. They held the advantage in points off turnovers, second-chance points, and bench points. They forced the Poets into 11 turnovers and scored 21 off the turnovers. On the other side, the Kingsmen committed 10, but only allowed the Poets to score 12.
Second-chance points were hard to come by as the Kingsmen held the advantage 13-4. The bench was also big for the Kingsmen and outscored the Poets 30-19.
The first half went back-and-forth and the score was tied 37-37 at the break. The Kingsmen opened the second half on a 22-10 run and took a 59-47 advantage with 12 minutes left. The Kingsmen never looked back and it was a rout the rest of the way.
The Kinsgsmen look to make it 10 straight wins as they host Caltech on Saturday at 2 p.m.
