CLAREMONT, Calif. — Cal Lutheran men's basketball extended its win streak to eight games and handed Pomona-Pitzer its first home and conference loss of the season, outlasting the Sagehens in a defensive battle 65-60 on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Kingsmen (12-3) move into first place in the SCIAC standings with a conference record of 5-1, while the Sagehens (11-3) fall to second place with a conference record of 4-1.
Nick Attanasio led the Kingsmen in scoring with 11 points,
Devon Lewis had 10 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season, and
Brock Susko and
Riley O'Connor added eight points.
The Sagehens jumped out to a seven-point lead through the first seven minutes of the game, but the Kingsmen answered back by going on a 17-4 run. By the end of the first half, the Kingsmen led 34-29.
The second half was a back-and-forth affair, with the Kingsmen only shooting 29.63% (8-27) from the field. The Kingsmen kept it close by locking down the three-point arc on the defensive end and getting to the free-throw line. They held the Sagehens to just one make on seven attempts from three and went 12-13 (92.31%) on free throws in the second half, including 7-8 in the final minute to close out the victory.
The Kingsmen look to stay hot and make it nine wins in a row when they go on the road to take on Whittier (4-10, 2-3 SCIAC) on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m.
