Regals Knock Off SCIAC Preseason Favorite La Verne

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Four Regals scored double-figures as Cal Lutheran women's basketball defeated the SCIAC preseason favorite La Verne 61-50 on Wednesday evening.

The Regals (9-4, 4-1 SCIAC) had dropped their last three matchups against the Leopards (7-4, 3-2 SCIAC) dating back to December of 2022, but got back on track thanks to a great team win.

"This was a true team win where everyone had a part in our victory," Head Coach Kelli DiMuro said. "La Verne has some tough players who came to play, yet our defense and rebounding were consistent all night. We have been working to hold teams under 50, and we did just that.

"Aliya DiMuro's defense and rebounding against one of the top players in the SCIAC gave us momentum all game and our 22 bench points were instrumental in our success. Also, Karina McMillan gave us some great minutes and filled the stat line."

Kaiya Mack led the Regals in scoring with 12 points, Janna Holley added 11, and Sara Mills and Grace Godines both added 10. Aliya DiMuro contributed 10 rebounds along with six points, her fifth game with double-digit rebounds.

The Regals played tough defense in the victory; the Leopards' 50 points is the lowest point total from a Regals opponent this season. They held the Leopards to 32.2% (19-59) shooting from the field and 22.7% (5-22) from three.

The Regals controlled for the majority of the contest, as they never trailed after the first quarter and possessed a lead for 33 minutes of the game.

The Leopards went on an 8-2 run in the fourth quarter to tie the game up at 47-47 with six minutes to go. The Regals answered right back with a 14-3 run of their own to finish off the game and secure the win.

The Regals look to make it three wins in a row when they go on the road to face Pomona-Pitzer (3-11, 0-5 SCIAC) on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 4 p.m.
