Melgoza, Schelotto, Scott Score as Kingsmen Defeat Whitworth

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — JP Melgoza, Maximo Schelotto, and Max Scott all scored as Cal Lutheran men's soccer defeated Whitworth 2-0 on Friday afternoon.

"Playing down a man from an unfortunate red card early on showed we have a ton of character," said head coach Miguel Ruiz. "Today was definitely a team win. Now we have to put this one behind us and get ready for Sunday."

The game was a neutral site contest as UC Santa Cruz played host for the Kingsmen and Pirates. The Kingsmen recorded their second shutout of the season as goalkeeper Gen Katashiba and defensemen Preston Fleming, Alejandro Rodriquez, Aidan Johnston, Ching Leung, Tyler Sherard, and Jack Gominiak kept the Pirates quiet.

The Kingsmen's offense started strong and scored in the first minute. Melgoza made a quick steal and was 1-on-1 with the goalie. He was able to capitalize and the Kingsmen took the momentum.

Cal Lutheran scored twice in the second half and it started with Schelotto. He scored his second goal of the year as the Kingsmen doubled up the Pirates in the 72nd minute. The Kingsmen added one more as Preston Fleming found Scott in the 79th

The Kingsmen continue the season on the road. They play Pacific (Ore.) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
