THOUSAND OAKS, Calif — Cal Lutheran football defeated Chapman for the first time since 2012 with a score of 24-21 on Saturday night.
"It was a great team win," said head coach
Anthony Lugo. "All three phases contributed. We are excited to take momentum and continue next week."
The Kingsmen improved to 1-1 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play and are 2-2 overall.
Quarterback
JP Andrade played a clean game and completed 20 of 31 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown. He threw a perfect fade to
Anthony Valencia who went up against two defenders and grabbed the 7-yard pass.
Andrade completed a pass to eight different receivers.
Cade Cadam had the most with six and totaled 64 yards.
Julio Angel was next with five catches for 61 yards.
Caleb Berry and
Dante Coxsom split time at the running back position and had 12 carries each. Berry had 46 yards while Coxsom had 41.
Dylan Turner had four rushing attempts and scored on a 2-yard run.
Special teams played a big role as the Kingsmen scored off a punt return and went 2-for-3 on fourth-down conversions. With the Panthers deep in their territory,
Osi Aliu blocked a punt and
Trevor Cadam returned it from seven yards out.
It was a group effort on defense with
Arthur Orta and
Jackson White leading the charge with seven tackles each. They both had a tackle for loss. Nolan Jackson and
Adam Herrera were next with six tackles and
Jayden Monick,
Devon Goosby and
Hunter Hall had five each. In total, the defense had 7.0 tackles for a loss of 18 yards.
The Kingsmen got on the board first as
Daniel Burgos drilled a 25-yard field goal to put his team on the board. The Panthers were quick to answer and scored 14 straight points as the Kingsmen fell into a hole. Cal Lutheran fired back as Andrade found Valencia for the score. The Kingsmen then took the lead as T. Cadam scored his special teams touchdown, giving his team a 17-14 lead at the half.
Cal Lutheran controlled the second half and on their opening drive went 92 yards on 16 plays that took up 7:27. It was capped off by the 2-yard run by Turner.
The Panthers cut into the lead, scoring a touchdown with 4:09 left, to make the score 24-21. The Cal Lutheran offense did the rest. The Kingsmen got three first downs, the game was over, and they picked up a huge win.
The Kingsmen stay at home for their next game. They host La Verne on Oct. 7th, for Homecoming, at 7 p.m.
