PASADENA, Calif — It was a rollercoaster of a match as Cal Lutheran women's volleyball won the first two sets, with Caltech taking the next two before the Regals finished it off in five on Friday night. Scores of the match were 25-14, 25-13, 21-25, 22-25, 15-10.
With the win, the Regals improved to 2-2 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play and are 4-10 overall.
Kira Mortensen and Tarin Rueckert controlled the net for the Regals. Mortensen had a career-high and team-high 16 kills to go along with six block assists. Reuckert recorded her third career double-double with 14 kills and a team-high 17 digs. She matched Mortensen with six total blocks.
Tess Holbert was all over the court. She recorded her fifth double-double with 36 assists and 10 digs. She added four kills, two block assists, and one ace. Sadie Peete added her fifth double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Caitlin Murphy was one kills shy of a double-double with nine and added 16 digs and two block assists.
The Regals easily won the first two sets, 25-14 and 25-13. With the first set tied at 7-7, the Regals scored five straight points and took a big lead. Brooklyne Miko served an ace and Murphy and Mortensen both swatted down a kill. They cruised to the first set win and took that momentum to the second set. The second set was also tied at 7-7 when the Regals made their move. They scored 14 straight points, which was jumpstarted by back-to-back aces by Sadie Peete, and went on to take the set.
With Cal Lutheran up 2-0, Caltech made its move. They won the next two sets and pushed the match to five. The Regals opened the fifth with a 6-1 run. Peete recorded two kills and Miko and Murphy had one each. The distance was more than enough as the Regals won the fifth set and the match.
The Regals return home for conference play. They host Chapman on Saturday at 6 p.m.
