Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

Kingsmen Split with D2 Opponents; Defeat Augustana, Fall to Biola

(LOS ANGELES — Sept. 14, 2023) Cal Lutheran men's water polo split their double-header against a pair of Division II opponents, beating Augustana 13-7 before falling to Biola 10-3 on Friday. It was day one of the Gary Troyer Invitational and the Kingsmen played today's games at Occidental.

"The team played really well today," said head coach John Jacobson. "Against Augustana the squad came away with a great team win. Versus Biola the boys kept the game close for a half before falling short in the fourth quarter. Team defense showed major improvement over the two games. Great start to the Gray Troyer Invitational for the Kingsmen"

Cal Lutheran 13, Augustana 7
For the second game in a row, Luke Matthies led the Cal Lutheran offense with five goals. Jack Bradbury scored three goals, Lincoln Hall and Adam Dow each contributed two of their own, and Zane Hermann found the net once. In goal, Bo Dubois recorded seven saves and the win.

Cal Lutheran went down 2-0 after the first period but finished off the half tied 5-5. The Kingsmen took control in the second half, dominating the third quarter by scoring five unanswered goals and maintaining the lead to pull out the victory.

Cal Lutheran 3, Biola 10
Matthies and David Brandt were the only Kingsmen to score against the Eagles, with Matthies scoring two of the three goals. Dow drew three ejections and recorded four steals to contribute to the effort. Dubois was in goal again and recorded 16 saves.

Biola's success on the powerplay was a key factor in the match, going 4-9 with a man advantage while Cal Lutheran was held scoreless in their five powerplay chances.

Cal Lutheran's record now stands at 4-7. The Kingsmen have a quick turnaround as they face Cal State Fullerton and the University of Pacific in a doubleheader on Saturday.
