Regals Drop Nail Biter to Poets; 31 Ties, 17 Lead Changes

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — In a game that went back and forth with 31 ties and 17 lead changes, it was Whittier that came out on top as they took down Cal Lutheran women's volleyball 3-1 on Tuesday night. 
 
Scores of the match were 23-25, 22-25, 25-23, 24-26. The Regals dell to 3-10 overall and 1-2 in conference play. 
 
Sadie Peete led the Regals with 20 kills and had a hitting percentage of .372. She was one dig shy of a double-double and added two aces. Kira Mortensen was next with 11 kills and added four total blocks, two of which were solo. 
 
Tess Holbert kept the offense moving and dished out 32 assists. She added eight digs also narrowly missing a double-double. Alysha Buffini was in the libero position and had a team-high 15 digs. 
 
After falling behind 2-0 after the first two sets, the Regals made their move in the third. The third was tied nine times as the score climbed to 12-12. The Poets thought a sweep was coming their way as they went 18-14. The Regals responded with four straight points and tied the set. Peete served two aces and recorded a kill during the run. The sets would be tied two more times before the Regals went up 24-22. The loudest play of the set came at the end as a solo block from Mortensen gave the Regals life. 
 
The Regals carried that momentum into the fourth set. The match continued to be close and there were another six ties as it got to 11-11. The Regals went on a 4-1 run and took a 15-12 lead. Peete and Rayne Selhorst swatted down a kill each. Whittier fought back, the match's narrative and the score was tied at 17. The Poets continued to get back into the match and went up 21-20 as Peete smashed down another kill to tie the match again. The Poets got the final say as they scored the last point and came out on top. 
 
The Regals look to get back in the win column on Friday. They are at Caltech at 7 p.m.
