THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Max Scott,
Preston Fleming, and
Joel Wollin all scored as Cal Lutheran men's soccer got their first conference win with a 3-1 win against Chapman on Wednesday night.
The Panthers struck early, scoring the match's opening goal in just the 3rd minute, but would be held scoreless for the rest of the contest.
Cal Lutheran's Scott netted the equalizer in the 23rd minute with a shot just out of reach of the diving Panthers keeper. With the second half starting knotted up at 1-1, Fleming scored to give the Kingsmen a 2-1 lead, with an assist coming from
Kai Nemoto. Wollin added an insurance goal in the 85th minute, assisted by
Maximo Schelotto.
After the initial goal, the defense held strong all night, with 90-minute efforts from
Aidan Johnston and
Tyler Sherard. Goalkeeper
Davis Sharts recorded four saves and got his third win of the season.
The Kingsmen showed character throughout, battling for the win in a physical game. Both teams combined for 28 fouls, and 4 yellow cards were given over the course of the match.
Cal Lutheran improved to 3-1-3 (1-0-2) as Chapman fell to 4-3 (1-2). The Kingsmen look to build on the momentum of their win when they hit the road to face Occidental next Wednesday, September 27 at 7 p.m.
