THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran men's basketball battled for a 58-52 win in another defensive match against Illinois Wesleyan on Monday afternoon.
Brock Susko led the Kingsmen in scoring with 10 points and five rebounds, Devon Lewis had nine points, and Patrick Renane contributed eight points.
The Kingsmen snapped the Titans' three-game winning streak in a contest that saw 15 lead changes and four ties.
Neither team could establish a lead in the first half. The Kingsmen went on a 10-2 run with four minutes to go in the first half, but the Titans answered back immediately with a 9-0 run of their own to close the half out with the lead 26-25.
The second half was just as tightly contested, as the two teams were tied 48-48 with just four minutes left in the game. With 2:47 left, Tommy Griffitts worked to get open beyond the arc and drilled his only three-pointer of the game to give the Kingsmen a three-point lead.
The Kingsmen got a stop on the defensive end and Nick Attanasio hit the dagger, a three-pointer to extend the lead to 54-48 forcing the Titans to take a timeout. The Kingsmen went 4-5 from the free throw line in the final two minutes to close out the game.
With the result, the Kingsmen begin their six-game home stand with a victory. They look to use the momentum when they face Kalamazoo College tomorrow, Tuesday, Dec. 19 at 2 p.m.
