Women's Soccer Faces Carleton in NCAA Tournament First Round

Claremont, Calif. — Cal Lutheran women's soccer is back in the NCAA Division III Championships for the 16th time and will open with Carleton College on Saturday, November 11th at 1:30 p.m. The first game on Saturday pits Pacific Lutheran against the host, Pomona-Pitzer

Tickets for the games are $6 for adults, $3 for seniors and students, and $2 for children aged 3-12. Fans will need to purchase a ticket each day.

A Look at the Teams

Cal Lutheran
The Regals (15-1-4) heard their name called on the NCAA Selection Show, earning an at-large bid to the tournament. They were the SCIAC Regular Season Co-Champs and fell to Pomona-Pitzer in the SCIAC Tournament championship game. This will be the Regals' 16th NCAA postseason appearance with Cal Lutheran reaching the Sweet Sixteen in 2017 for the first time in program history.

Avery West was named SCIAC Defensive Player of the Year to lead six Regals on the all-conference awards. Ally Fisicaro, Eden Quiroz, and Isabella Veljacic joined West on the First Team and Savana Durr and Adriana Maroney were on the Second Team. It's been a historic season for the Regals which have 12 shutouts and outscored their opponents 37-9. Logan Duford is in goal and has a record of 10-1-3. 

Carleton
The Knights (16-2-2), an at-large selection, are making their fourth all-time appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament (2008, 2009, and 2010). The Knights recorded their second-highest win total in program history. For the second consecutive season, they went undefeated in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action en route to the conference regular-season title. 

Piper Dean was the MIAC Defensive Player of the Year and Head Coach Jessica Mueller was Coach of the Year. Dean was joined by Sam Gotch, Kathryn Kresse, and Cate Patterson on the All-Conference Team. Kresse leads the attack with nine goals and eight assists while Dean and Ashlyn Haigh have six goals each. The Knights have outscored their opponents 52-8 and have shut out 12 opponents.

Pacific Lutheran
The Lutes (15-4-1) were one of 42 automatic qualifiers to the tournament by winning the NWC title this fall. This is the Lutes' sixth trip to the NCAA Tournament and the 12th overall national tournament appearance for the program. They have won three national titles in 1988, 1989, and 1991. 

Hannah Cecil leads the way with 17 goals and Alyssa Leong has nine goals and 12 assists. Julia Causbie has eight goals and Lily Dose has seven more. The Lutes shut out 12 opponents, outscoring their competition 52-12. Abby Winkler is the main goalkeeper with a record of 14-4-1. 

Pomona-Pitzer
The Sagehens (15-0-3) earned their spot in the tournament after winning the SCIAC Tournament Championship. This will be the sixth NCAA Appearance for the Sagehens, since the 2015 season with Pomona-Pitzer reaching the Elite Eight in 2016 and the Final Four in 2019. 

Ella Endo was named the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Year and Head Coach Jen Scanlon was Coaching Staff of the Year. Patricia DePalma, Spencer Deutz, and Eliana Prosnitz joined Endo on the First Team and Vivian Rojas Collins was on the Second Team. Prosnitz has six goals and Hannah Hong and Endo have five each. The Sagehens have shut out 12 opponents and goalkeeper DePalma has a 10-0-3 record.
