THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran football wrapped up its regular season as they hosted Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for Senior Day on Saturday. The Stags defeated the Kingsmen by a score of 30-13.
Before the game, the Kingsmen honored their graduating class of Osi Aliu, JP Andrade, Sam Aseh, Jesse Breton, Mathew Buchanan-Garza, Jadon Cline, Dante Coxsom, Adam Herrera, Nolan Jackson, Tyson Lundring, Phillip Martinez, James McNamara, Zacharias Muhammad, Jacob Murillo, Christian Paquian, Gavin Roe, Tyler Shimomura, Desmond Thompson, Max Thorne, Jackson White, and Journey Williams.
Defense was the name of the game in the first half. The Kingsmen scored first and got on the board with three seconds left in the first quarter. Daniel Burgos connected on a 27-yard field goal.
The Stags countered in the second. They scored the first touchdown with 9:08 to go in the half. Later in the game, a blocked punt by the Stags had them in business again with a short field to work with. They added a second touchdown with 4:25 left and went up 14-3. On Cal Lutheran's final possession of the half, a strip sack allowed the Stage to get into field goal range. They made it 17-3 at the break.
Kingsmen shut down the Stags to open the third period and scored a touchdown on their first drive of the second half. McNamara found Cade Cadam for a three-yard strike. The Kingsmen made it a one-possession game on their next drive. Burgos made his second field goal, this one from 32 yards to make it 17-13.
The Stags fired back and scored a touchdown just three seconds into the fourth quarter. They scored a second time with a 24-yard field goal with five minutes remaining. After a Cal Lutheran interception, CMS added another field goal and went up 30-13 with 3:33 to go. The Stags defense did the rest as they took the game.
McNamara and Andrade split time at the quarterback position. McNamara was 14-of-25 in the air for 163 yards with a touchdown and interception. He also ran for 92 yards with a 5.4 average. Cadam had the most receptions and yards with eight catches for 62 yards and a score.
The Kingsmen defense had 6.0 tackles for loss as Jake Frey, Troy Mills, Max Juarez, Devon Goosby, Aliu, and Muhammad all had one. Jackson Nolan had the most tackles with nine, Frey forced a fumble, and Anthony Gallego recovered the fumble.
The Kingsmen have one final game in 2023. They play at La Verne on Nov. 11 for fifth place in the SCIAC. The time is to be determined.
