Kingsmen Come Up Short Against Hood College

FREDERICK, Md. — Down by three points with 18 seconds left, the Kingsmen had the final shot but couldn't complete the comeback as Cal Lutheran men's basketball (3-2) fell to Hood College (5-1) 78-75 on Friday afternoon.

Three Kingsmen reached double-figures and seven different Kingsmen recorded a three-pointer as the Kingsmen shot 41.7% (15-36) from beyond the arc. Brock Susko led the way with 14 points, Nick Attanasio was next with 13, and Patrick Renane had 11.

Early in the first half, the Blazers went on two different 7-0 runs. Their zone defense gave the Kingsmen trouble on the offensive end, as they started 1-7 from the field.

The Kingsmen would end their cold streak by knocking down 6 three-pointers on 11 attempts to finish the half strong. After chasing a deficit as large as nine points, Stephen Davis hit a floater right at the buzzer to cut the Blazers' lead to 1 before the half ended. The scoreboard read 41-40 at the break.

At the 13-minute mark of the second half, Taj Regans knocked down a three to give the Kingsmen their first lead at 55-54. But the Blazers answered by going on an 11-3 run to put them back ahead 65-58.

The Kingsmen kept it close the rest of the way. Devon Lewis hit a baseline jumper to make it 76-75 Blazers with under a minute to play. The Blazers scored at the other end to make it a three-point game with the Kingsmen having the final shot and chance to send the game into overtime, but they couldn't get a shot off before time ran out.

With the result, the Kingsmen end their road trip on the East Coast and return for conference play. They face Redlands on the road on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 2 p.m.
