THOUSAND OAKS, Calif — Goals from
JP Melgoza,
Maximo Schelotto, and
Jack Gominiak fueled Cal Lutheran men's soccer to a 3-0 win over Whittier on Wednesday night.
"It's always good to play well at home in front of our fans," said head coach
Miguel Ruiz. "We now move on and on to the next one against Redland which they are always a good program."
The match was scoreless for the first 29 minutes, as both teams had chances but could not convert them into goals. That changed when Melgoza dribbled through the Poet defense and scored to get the Kingsmen on the board.
The Kingsmen struck again six minutes into the 2nd half, as Schelotto scored thanks to a beautiful pass by
Joel Wollin to set it up. Gomniak went on to score Cal Lutheran's final insurance goal in the 75th minute with the primary assist coming from
Daniel Fujiwara and the secondary assist coming from
Kai Nemoto.
Both teams ended the game with 14 shots, but defenders
Aidan Johnston, Tyler Sheard, and
Santiago Rivas only let 2 of those 14 get through. Goalkeeper
Davis Sharts secured those two saves and earned the victory.
With the result, Cal Lutheran moves to 5-1-4 (3-0-3) as Whittier falls to 3-6-1 (1-5-1). The Kingsmen continue conference play on the road against Redlands this Saturday, October 7th at 1 p.m.
