CLAREMONT, Calif. — Cal Lutheran women's volleyball gave No. 4 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps a scare as they took the first set before falling 3-1 on Friday night. Scores of the match were 25-23, 10-25, 19-25, and 6-25.
Sadie Peete led the way with 11 kills,
Caitlin Murphy was next with seven, and
Tarin Rueckert and
Kira Mortensen had six.
Tess Holbert kept the offense moving and dished out 28 assists.
Amy Buffini and Rueckert recorded double-digit dis with 12 and 11, respectively.
The Regals made some noise in the first set and put pressure on the Athenas. They went on a 5-0 run and took a 7-2 lead. Buffini recorded two service aces and Holbert added a kill. The set would then be five times as the score climbed to 15-all. Cal Lutheran fired again, this time a 4-0 run, and took some breathing room. Peete served two aces and added a kill and Rueckert had a kill. The Regals held off the Athenas and took the first set.
The Athenas fought back and took the second as the match was tied 1-1 going to the third. The third set was tied eight times early on. The score was 12-12 before the Athenas took over. A 5-point run had them in control. The Athenas took the third set, carried the momentum into the fourth, and won the match.
The Regals (9-15, 7-7 SCIAC) return home for their final two games of the regular season. They host Redlands on Saturday at 6 p.m.
