Regals Record Season-High .380 Attack Percentage; Surge Past Poets

WHITTIER, Calif.— The Cal Lutheran women's volleyball team recorded a season-high hitting percentage of .380, with six players recording five-plus kills each, as the Regals got an impressive win against a gutsy Whittier College team with a final score of 3-1 (25-11, 28-26, 28-30, 25-6) Wednesday night in the Graham Athletic Center. 

The Regals won their fourth straight game, all in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play, and improved to 10-6 overall and 4-1 in conference. 

CLU came out firing and hit with a .632 percentage in the first set. The Violet and Gold followed it up with .319 in the second, .308 in the third and .438 in the fourth. The .380 percentage for the game bested the Regals' previous top mark of .319. 

Maci Haddad swatted down a career-high 20 kills, on 33 attempts, and hit with an impressive .545 clip. She continued her strong play around the net and recorded four block assists. 

Amanda Roberts tallied her sixth double-double, and second in as many games. She connected on 15 kills and tied the a match-high with 16 digs. Paris Dosch was next with nine kills, Sarah Hein converted seven, Steph Rolfson tallied six and Amy McKee put up five more. 

Nine Regals in all tallied a kill as Lauren Heller and Daniella Villano had two and Mackenzie Martinez and Hannah Cantrell both had one. 

Rolfson was everywhere on the night. She recorded a career-high 55 assists. She put up her seventh double-double as she added 12 digs. She was four kills shy of a triple-double and recorded six, with a hitting percentage of .625. She added four total blocks and two service aces.

Carly Rose Howard tied with Roberts for the match-high in digs with 16. Howard added two service aces to her numbers. Hein also put up double-digit digs with 13. 

Julia Trento helped the offense, and led the Regals with three service aces. Heller added two more. The Regals recorded 10 service aces compared to Whittier's two. 

Cal Lutheran also controlled the ball around the net and tallied nine total blocks, while Whittier had four. 

In set one, the Regals jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead. Haddad recorded two kills and combined with Roberts for a block assist. Roberts and Rolfson then added back-to-back kills and pushed the lead to 6-2. Cal Lutheran kept the points coming in bunches as Dosch, Roberts and Haddad added more kills. The Regals pushed the lead to seven and were up 14-7. 

Cal Lutheran controlled all facets of the game in the first set and increased their lead throughout the rest of the set. CLU took the set 25-11 and had a 1-0 lead in the match. The Regals looked dominant as they totaled 13 kills, three service aces and three blocks, for 19 of their 25 points. The Regals hit .632 as a team. 

The second set started much closer. With the score tied at 7, Trento served an ace. The Regals made it three straight points as McKee and Hein added back-to-back kills. The Poets fought back and took a two-point lead at 17-15, which prompted a timeout from CLU. 

Coming out of the timeout, the Regals rattled off three straight kills as WC took a timeout. Hein added two kills and McKee had one. The teams continued to exchange points and were tied at every point from 19-19 to 26-26. After Whittier had an attack error, Haddad put the finishing touches on the set as she swatted down the final kill. CLU claimed set two with a score of 28-26 and had a 2-0 match lead. 

The Poets flipped the script in the third set and won 30-28. The Regals turned around with something to show in the fourth set. CLU came out on fire and scored the first five points of the set. The Regals' defense was huge as CLU took a commanding 10-2 lead. Cal Lutheran tallied three blocks and the defense took care of the rest. Roberts swatted down three kills and Dosch and Haddad each added one. 

CLU continued to push the envelope and were up by ten with a score of 15-5. The Regals coasted the rest of the way, scoring 10 straight points in a row, and won the set 25-6 and the match 3-1. The Regals were offense showed out in the fourth set and hit with a .438 percentage. 

Cal Lutheran returns home for its next match. The Regals continue SCIAC play with Chapman on Friday at 7 p.m. in Gilbert Arena.
