THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The California Lutheran women's tennis team defeated the Willamette Bearcats 6-3, but lost to the No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens 9-0 Saturday afternoon at the Poulson Tennis Center.
The Regals and Sagehens opened up Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play. With the split on the day, Cal Lutheran is 3-8 overall and 0-1 in the SCIAC.
Against Willmatte, the Regals took a 2-1 lead during doubles play. Christie Kurdys and Gianna Cupo won at the No. 1 spot (8-7) and Nicole Neumann and Annette Sousa claimed the No. 2 spot (8-3). Sarah Seeman and Jade Moore fell at the No. 3 (8-3).
Kurdys made it 3-1 as she didn't aloow her opponent to score a point at the No. 1 spot (6-0, 6-0). Seeman it 4-1 as she won at the No. 2 (6-0, 6-1). Cupo clinched the dual for the Regals as she won at the No. 3 (6-1, 6-1). Sousa then won at the No. 4 (6-0, 6-3). Neumann fell at the No. 5 (1-6, 7-6, 14-10) and Moore retired at the No. 6 (6-1, 2-3). The Regals won their third match of the year as they defeated the Bearcats 6-3.
Against Pomona-Pitzer, Cal Lutheran battled, but came up short in the doubles matches. Kurdys and Cupo were close as they lost at the No. 1 (8-7). Neumann and Sousa put up a fight, but fell short at the No. 2 (8-5). Merissa Souza and Moore were defeated at the No. 3 (8-1) and PP had a 3-0 lead going into singles.
The Sagehens took care of the Regals in singles play. Pomona-Pitzer swept Cal Lutheran and won at all six singles spots. The Sagehens won the match 9-0.
The Regals continue the season with SCIAC play. Cal Lutheran hosts Chapman Friday at 2 p.m. in the Poulson Tennis Center.
