THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - In the final Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match of the regular season, the Cal Lutheran women's tennis team shut out Chapman 9-0 at Costa Mesa Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Violet and Gold cruised ahead to an early 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles portion of the match. Christie Kurdys and Emily Werman were dominant at No. 1 with an 8-1 victory while Gianna Cupo and Sarah Seeman took care of their opponents 8-3 at No. 2. The final doubles match to finish featured Nicole Neumann and Bridgette Stewart at No. 3, turning in an 8-4 final score.
Neumann made quick work at No. 5 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory while Seeman had little trouble at No. 4 with a 6-1, 6-2 decision. Cupo was strong at No. 3 downing her opponent 6-2, 6-2 and Kurdys edged her opponent in straight sets as well with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) final. Stewart wrapped up No. 6 singles with a 7-6 (2), 6-3 win and Werman took No. 2 to a third set tiebreaker to rally for a 5-7, 6-1, 10-3 victory to complete the shutout.
Cal Lutheran (5-10, 3-4 SCIAC) competes at the Ojai Valley Tournament beginning this Thursday, Apr. 27 before rounding out the season at the SCIAC Championships, starting on May 5.
