Nine Players Score as Kingsmen Defeat Tigers

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Inside the Samuelson Aquatics Center the Kingsmen water polo team hosted the Occidental Tigers in a Southern California Athletic Intercollegiate Conference (SCIAC) Saturday morning. The Kingsmen came out on fire and kept the pressure on as they defeated the Tigers 17-4.

The Violet and Gold started strong as Matt Fong scored the opening goal 35 seconds into the game. After an Occidental goal, the Kingsmen offense went to work and scored three straight goals. Fong, Davy Thomas and Justin English put the Kingsmen ahead 4-1. In the final 1:15, Thomas scored two more goals and Taggart Diehl added one. CLU had a 7-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter didn't see much scoring early on. With 4:49 left in the half, Mats Albins floated a beautiful shot over the goalkeeper. Andre Laserna added a goal 30 seconds later and the Kingsmen had a 9-2 lead. CLU hit double-digits with 1:35 left in the half as Stephen Blaauw scored on a breakaway. Nick Loomis was in the goal for the Kingsmen during the first half and tallied six blocks with a save percentage of .750. At the half, CLU was up 10-2.

Cal Lutheran continued to put up points in the second half. Kevin Oetken and English scored twice during the third quarter to push the lead to 14-3.  In the fourth, Blaauw, Parker Jory and Laserna scored as the Kingsmen won 17-4.  Jake Venckus was in goal during the fourth quarter for the Kingsmen and made two saves.

Thomas and English led the team with three goals apiece. Fong, Oetken, Laserna and Blaauw added two each. Albins, Diehl and Parker Jory each had one. Loomis was in goal for the first three quarters and made nine saves.

Cal Lutheran (10-11, 4-5 SCIAC) continues the season on the road as the Kingsmen take on the La Verne Leopards Wednesday at 4 p.m.
