CLAREMONT, Calif. - Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play continued this evening at Pomona-Pitzer where the Cal Lutheran women's basketball team took down the Sagehens by a 77-55 margin at Voelkel Gymnasium inside of the Rains Center.
The visiting Regals won the tip-off and never trailed throughout the night. Haley Hodgson, Jessica Salottolo and Sofia Cruz scored on consecutive possessions, behind a pair of forced turnovers, to open a 6-0 advantage in less than a minute and pushed the differential to as many as 29 points early in the fourth quarter. CLU was ahead by 11 at 40-29 entering halftime and never relinquished a double digit lead over the final two frames.
Offensive Highlights: Both Hodgson and Salottolo scored 14 points while Tatiana Dunlap notched 11 and Cruz chipped in with 10 on a night when a dozen different players got in on the scoring activity. Danielle Roumbos scored a career-high seven points for the Regals off the bench as the reserves poured in 31 points in the win. As a team, CLU shot 43.7 percent from the floor, knocking down six three-pointers with a pair from Salottolo. The Violet and Gold toed the free-throw line 12 times and converted nine as Dunlap, Hodgson, Taylor Messick and Natalie Ruhl hit a pair apiece. Cruz and Grace Derksen each handed out five assists in the win.
Defensive Highlights: Cal Lutheran looked to Hodgson and Janelle Porter to pace the defense with seven rebounds each, sharing the game-high. Both players grabbed three offensive boards and Porter posted a team-leading three steals while Hodgson recorded two blocks. Salottolo finished with six rebounds, all at the defensive end, and a pair of steals as well.
The Opponent: Pomona-Pitzer was held to a 39.3 shooting percentage and struggled from three-point range (3-for-12), but put three players in double figures for scoring. Alaina Woo led all players 19 points and hit two of the three from long range. Kacie Hitomi pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, to match the CLU pair of Hodgson and Porter, and added 13 points. Keilani Ikehara finished with a game-best five steals for the Sagehens.
Cal Lutheran (6-5, 2-0 SCIAC) returns home for the first of back-to-back games inside of the Gilbert Arena on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 2:00 p.m. against Whittier.
