THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - After a 7-0 defeat at the hands of Chapman in their last meeting a season ago, the new look Cal Lutheran men's soccer team got sweet redemption on Monday night with a 2-0 shutout over the Panthers at Rolland Stadium.
The Kingsmen avoided an early scare that saw the Panthers attempt two close range headers with one ricocheting off the crossbar.
On the counter attack, CLU found forward Charlie Villa-Lovos out front and he promptly whizzed a shot that deflected off the keeper's glove and into the back of the net to put the Violet and Gold ahead, 1-0.
Later in the second half, Andres Mendoza took a corner kick for CLU and placed one perfectly into the middle of the box. After nearly five seconds of getting kicked around, the ball found itself at the foot of Brandon Kearney who did not miss his chance and drove it into the goal for a 2-0 lead.
Stout defense by Cristian Yepez, Jesse Gallardo and goalkeeper Sergio Esquivel as well as the entire Kingsmen unit helped preserve the shutout.
Villa-Lovos and Kearney finished with a game-high three shots while Esquivel recorded one save. CLU outshot the Panthers 11-7 and were even on corner kicks 4-4.
Cal Lutheran (3-2, 2-1 SCIAC) will hit the road to take on Occidental in SCIAC action this Saturday, Sept. 17 at 7:00 p.m.
