THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - In the first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) matchup at home this season, the Cal Lutheran men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 contest to the No. 21 Redlands Bulldogs after a barrage of second half goals at Rolland Stadium on Saturday night.
The first half was evenly contested as both teams traded possession and opportunities at the goal. In the 29th minute, the Kingsmen had their best chance to score all night as Jaime Alvarado fired a shot past the defense but it deflected off the crossbar. Andres Mendoza rebounded the deflection and had a clear look at the goal but missed just wide.
The teams would head into halftime locked in a scoreless tie with the Kingsmen holding a 7-5 advantage on shots but the Bulldogs winning the corner kick advantage 4-0.
In the second half it was all Redlands as the Bulldogs found the back of the net three times in the 49th, 60th and 77th minutes of the match to seal the victory.
Brandon Kearney, Elmer Molina, Luis Perez and Alvarado each had two shots apiece to lead the Kingsmen who finished with 12 shots total. Sergio Esquivel logged five saves in the match.
Redlands (4-0, 2-0 SCIAC) was led by five shots and a goal from Chase Boone while goalkeeper Josh Haskill recorded three saves. Five yellow cards and 22 fouls were called in the physical contest.
Cal Lutheran (2-2, 1-1 SCIAC) will continue conference action at home against Chapman on Monday, Sept. 12 at 7:00 p.m.
