THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - On a day when senior Rebecca Drake was recognized prior to the match, the Cal Lutheran women's tennis team made the day even more memorable with an 8-1 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) victory over Chapman to close out home action at the Poulson Tennis Center this spring.
After an unusual delay, caused by a swarm of bees, action got started and the extra adrenalin helped the Violet and Gold.
On court number two, Rebecca Gold and Christie Kurdys posted the first team point of the day on a Gold ball down the line to lock up the match 8-1. The second CLU point from doubles play came at No. 3 where Shelby Kubota and Annette Sousa silenced the Panthers pair for an 8-3 victory and a 2-0 CLU advantage. Although the top doubles duo was unable to post a clean sweep, the competition was fierce as the pairs battled to extra points at 9-7.
Once singles action got underway, Cal Lutheran dominated play. Both Sousa and Kurdys earned clean sweeps of 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 and No. 4, respectively. After Sousa recorded the first singles point, Gold followed suit with a 6-0, 6-1 victory on court five before Kurdys clinched the match. Sarah Seeman went on to win 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 and Werman wrapped up a 6-3, 6-1 win on the third court. Rounding out the day on the first court, Cupo worked her way to a 7-5, 6-2 victory to put the match in the books.
