PASADENA, Calif. - The No. 7 Cal Lutheran women's volleyball team swept past Caltech 3-0 (25-7, 25-6, 25-17) in an all-around team effort that saw all 15 players for the Regals see the court in a match that lasted just over an hour on Thursday night.
The Regals made quick work of the Beavers in the first set. They took the lead early and held it throughout. Dani Gonzalez came in to help on service and led the Regals to win the last ten points of the set. CLU's defense was able to limit Caltech to just seven points total and the Violet and Gold took the first set in a flash at 25-7.
The Regals got off to a slow start, however, in the second set and a few errors gave the Beavers momentum to tie the score at five. The Regals responded with an incredible 18-point scoring run, 15 of which starred Carly Rose Howard behind the back line. Howard was able to stay focused and serve 15 straight points across the court to help CLU prevail, she had two service aces as well. The Beavers were able to put one more point on the board but it was not enough. The Regals closed the set out at 25-6.
The Beavers took the first point of the third set but their lead did not last long. The Regals scored four points before Caltech scored again. CLU quickly took and held the lead after a six-point scoring run to go up 19-11. The Beavers were able to grab six more points at the end but it was not enough to close the gap the Regals had made, CLU took the set 25-17.
Dianna Rohrer came out on top for the Regals with seven kills, while Amy McKee and Molly Holloway had six kills, respectively. Hope Stewart and Charlie Furey came in next at four kills apiece, Stewart also had five digs. Howard helped the Regals with defense as well coming up with 12 digs, the highest of the night. Gonzalez had four service aces and six digs. CLU had a combined hitting percentage of .450. Jamie Smith led the team with 12 assists.
The Regals (15-4, 6-2 SCIAC) will look for a repeat performance as they face Caltech once more this Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 7:00 p.m. inside Gilbert Arena.
