CLAREMONT, Calif. - For the second consecutive game, the Cal Lutheran men's soccer team hit the road. An early deficit was too much for the Kingsmen to overcome as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags stifled the visiting team in a 5-1 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) loss tonight.

Offensive Highlights: CLU held a 16-12 shooting advantage and earned more corner kicks than CMS with three. In the 85th minute Aspen Smith put up the only crooked number of the night for the Kingsmen when he and Branden Vogl connected for a goal. It was Smith's first collegiate goal and Vogl's first collegiate assist. Last week's SCIAC Athlete of the Week Brandon Kearney paced the offense with the first three CLU shots of the game including one on target and finished with four. Spencer Gottmer came off the bench to take two shots, which were both accurate. Smith and Bryan Hulse each finished with a pair of attempts.

Defensive Highlights: Nico Melendez earned the first SCIAC start of his career tonight and tallied two saves. Peter Wilder took over in the second half, recording three saves in 45 minutes.

The Opponent: Claremont-Mudd-Scripps jumped out to a quick lead when Hogan Marhoefer scored in the 8th minute and added a second on an assist from Alex Censullo at the14:34 mark to push the CMS lead to 3-0. Just over 12 minutes into the game Michael Crowley scored as well. The Stags held a 4-0 advantage at the intermission and came back to add one more in the second half.

Notables: Twenty-four players stepped on the field tonight for CLU. Cal Lutheran is nearly through the first half of the SCIAC season with one more game to play in the first round.

Next Up: Cal Lutheran (2-6-2, 2-4-1 SCIAC) will return to William Rolland Stadium for a soccer-football double-header on Saturday, Oct. 3. The Kingsmen will host the Whittier Poets for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff prior to the football game at 7:00 p.m. also against WC.
