Cal Lutheran's Postseason Hopes End at CMS

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran men's soccer team fell 3-0 on the road Wednesday night at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, officially ending the Kingsmen's hopes of reaching the SCIAC Tournament with one conference match remaining.

The Kingsmen (5-8-4, 3-6-2 SCIAC) faced a difficult challenge against the Stags (9-5-3, 6-3-2 SCIAC), who applied consistent offensive pressure throughout the night. CMS finished with a 24-19 advantage in shots, including 12 attempts on goal, while Cal Lutheran goalkeeper Anthony Sound recorded nine saves.

Cal Lutheran created opportunities early, with Maximo Schelotto testing the CMS goalkeeper in the 13th minute before Zach Mohr nearly put the Kingsmen ahead two minutes later, striking the post. Mohr continued to threaten, adding another attempt in the 18th minute, but the Stags kept Cal Lutheran off the scoreboard.

CMS broke through in the 29th minute when James Gomez found the back of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage. The Stags doubled their lead just before halftime, as Matteo Quadrini finished a cross from Clayton Thomas in the 44th minute, with Daniel Zhu also credited with an assist.

The Kingsmen looked to respond after the break, but CMS extended its advantage in the 56th minute. Gomez scored his second goal of the night with a strike from the top of the box, pushing the Stags' lead to 3-0.

Sound continued to keep the Kingsmen within reach, finishing with nine saves over the full 90 minutes as CMS maintained its attacking pressure. Cal Lutheran put seven shots on target, with Schelotto leading the way with two attempts on goal. Axel Jimenez made seven saves for the Stags to preserve the shutout.

The loss officially eliminates Cal Lutheran from postseason contention, bringing an end to the Kingsmen's hopes of extending their season into the SCIAC Tournament.

Cal Lutheran will close out the 2026 campaign on Saturday, October 31, traveling to Pomona-Pitzer for an 11 a.m. matchup against the Sagehens. The Kingsmen will look to finish the season strong in their final appearance of the year.
