PASADENA, Calif. - In the final Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic (SCIAC) dual match of the spring the Cal Lutheran women's tennis team played to an 8-1 win over Caltech on the road this afternoon.
The day started with a 3-0 sweep in doubles play and all but one of the singles matches were victorious for the Violet and Gold as well.
Freshman Mallory Kenny picked up her first individual SCIAC victory at Cal Lutheran as the Regals' No. 1 player. Kenny posted scores of 6-2, 6-2 to record the win. Earlier in the day, with teammate Shelby Kubota, the pair notched their second SCIAC win by defeating their opponents 8-4 on the No. 2 court.
Kubota earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles while Rebecca Gold and Annette Sousa won 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 and No. 6 respectively. Emily Werman also came out on top in singles play with a pair of 6-3 wins.
At the beginning of the match, Sousa and Werman teamed up at No. 1 doubles for a 9-7 win while Gold and Sarah Baker cruised to an 8-0 sweep at No. 3.
Cal Lutheran (9-8, 3-5 SCIAC) will send student-athletes to compete at the Ojai Tournament on Thursday, April 23 as the final competition date prior to SCIAC Championships on May 1-2 at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
