THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - For four years, Sarah Baker has donned the Violet and Gold for the Cal Lutheran women's tennis team and today in her final home appearance for the Regals, the lone senior made it a match to remember as she helped the Violet and Gold to a 6-3 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic (SCIAC) victory over No. 11 regionally ranked Whittier this afternoon.
Surrounded by teammates prior to competition, Baker was honored and thanked for her contributions to the program, which she will leave her name in the record books for both singles and doubles play. She added to each career tally today with wins in each area. To start the day, she and Rebecca Gold teamed up for a flawless 8-0 win and despite having to go to a third set tiebreaker on the No. 4 court against Jada Henry, she remained composed after falling in the first set, by coming back to win 6-7, 6-2, 6-3.
Teammate Emily Werman clinched the match for the Regals after helping the home squad post one of the first points of the day with an 8-1 doubles win beside Annette Sousa, who also won her No. 6 singles sets, 6-0, 6-1. Werman fell in the first set, but bounced back to take the final two sets to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, prompting a fist pump and enthusiastic cheer.
Rounding out the team points for the Regals under clear blue skies with perfect temperatures was Shelby Kubota who cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win on court No. 5.
Cal Lutheran (8-8, 2-5 SCIAC) finishes its regular season on the road against Caltech on Saturday, April 18 at 10:00 a.m.
