CLAREMONT, Calif. - Earlier this week the Cal Lutheran women's tennis team huddled together for the finish to a much extended match when the temperatures dropped into the 40's, but this morning the outing was much different as the Regals suited up for an outing in 80-degree weather with sunny, clear skies.
Unfortunately, facing Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) No. 5 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the visiting CLU squad fell by a 9-0 margin.
To start the event, two of the doubles matches swung back and forth with Annette Sousa and Emily Werman and Sarah Baker and Rebecca Gold each battling to 8-4 finals, though the CMS duos finished ahead on both courts No. 2 and 3, respectively.
Once singles started, Gold returned to the second position in the line-up, after a stint at No. 3, where she produced the closest games of the afternoon despite falling 6-3, 6-1. For the third straight match, Werman was the last woman playing and today, although she finished on the short end, 6-2, 6-2, brought excitement to the courts once again.
Rounding out the Regals to play today were Mallory Kenny and Shelby Kubota.
Cal Lutheran (3-4, 1-3 SCIAC) will be out of competition for the week before hosting Principia (Mo.) at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 13, at the Poulson Tennis Center.
