THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Two days removed from an epic five-hour battle, which ended on a sour note for the Cal Lutheran women's tennis team, the Regals were back on the courts for another non-conference match. Facing Biola this afternoon, CLU cruised by the Eagles, winning 6-3 to again even their overall season record.
Starting strong has been the team mantra this season and again the Violet and Gold opened an early lead. The No. 1 duo of Mallory Kenny and Shelby Kubota disposed of Madeline Heer and Kelsey Post in an 8-1 final while at No. 3 the pair of Sarah Baker and Rebecca Gold won by an 8-2 margin.
Coming off a three-hour, third set tiebreaker singles battle on Wednesday night, Emily Werman had her next outing end the same way as she teamed up with Annette Sousa for doubles play as the duo dropped a 9-8 (5) decision at No. 2. Sousa promptly bounced back with the first point at No. 6 singles, winning 6-0, 6-1 to push the CLU advantage to 3-1.
Kubota, Gold and Baker followed suit at No. 5, 3 and 4, respectively, to put the match in the books. An undefeated match from Kubota saw the sophomore win 6-0, 6-0. Gold used a 6-1, 6-3 showing to ultimately clinch the team victory and Baker posted a 6-2, 6-1 win.
Cal Lutheran (3-3) returns to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action tomorrow, Saturday, March 7, when the Regals travel to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for a 10:00 a.m. first serve against the Athenas.
